Jagex addresses the inclusion of generative AI in a RuneScape trailer created by a "trusted external partner"

Jagex, the company behind RuneScape, has addressed the utilization of generative AI in a trailer for the Dragon Slayer 2 quest, showcased at RuneFest.

According to Eurogamer, scrutiny by Reddit users revealed significant use of generative AI in the trailer, with noticeable anomalies like a character having six fingers and footwear resembling Air Jordans.

Jagex has clarified that the trailer was developed by an external partner who previously assured them that generative AI would not be employed. The trailer has since been taken down while an investigation is conducted.

The company emphasized, "At Jagex, it's our stated policy not to employ generative AI in developing our games, artistic creations, or promotional content. We will also not permit it to be used on our behalf knowingly." Jagex mentioned that this issue highlighted a gap in their procedures that needs addressing.

Following RuneFest, Jagex will revise their evaluation processes and engage community creators to ensure the narrative quality of Dragon Slayer II meets their standards.

The company also recalled a previous incident involving the use of generative AI in a project with the brand 100 Thieves, stressing their frustration over unauthorized AI use. Jagex retains a firm stance against replacing artists and developers with AI, and this extends to marketing and merchandising.

Senior Vice President of Product at Jagex, James Dobrowski, informed GamesIndustry.biz that the company pledges not to have generative AI influence any elements of the game that can be interacted with by players. He noted that AI might enhance operational efficiencies but will not guide creative processes.

Jagex is conducting thorough audits and discussions with external collaborators to ensure AI is not utilized inappropriately, preventing it from affecting the final game or related promotional content.
