Sony has finalized a deal to purchase Cinemersive Labs, a company known for its work in machine learning and computer vision. Based in the United Kingdom, Cinemersive Labs specializes in creating 3D photography and video technology for virtual and augmented reality applications. This company will join Sony Interactive Entertainment's Visual Computing Group, focusing on research and development within SIE.

Cinemersive Labs will contribute to enhancing Sony's capabilities in visual computing for gaming. This includes utilizing machine learning technologies to upgrade the visual experience and enhance rendering methods in games.

Sony's Visual Computing Group (VCG) came into existence in 2024, following its integration with AI firm iSize and segments of the Game Platform Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) division at SIE. The division is staffed by a significant number of R&D engineers with specialized expertise in areas such as neural networks, video coding, quality assessment, generative models, game rendering, and high-performance computing.

In other developments this year, Sony secured a patent for an AI-driven system aimed at providing assistance to gamers. Known as the 'AI-generated ghost player,' this feature operates like a cooperative partner by engaging with the game's environment to suggest possible solutions to players who are stuck.

Filed in 2024, this patent gained attention after a status update in January. Sony has also pursued additional patents, including innovations designed to predict player actions to minimize lag, recognize player frustration through devices such as microphones and controllers, and simulate player behavior to identify potential online cheats.
