Jagex, the company behind RuneScape, has pledged not to utilize generative AI for creating in-game content
Jagex, the game developer headquartered in the UK, has clearly stated that it will not include AI-generated content within its game environments.
In a discussion with GamesIndustry.biz, James Dobrowski, Jagex's SVP of product, reiterated the company's firm position on not using AI for "driving creativity" in their games.
Dobrowski mentioned that while AI might be integrated into behind-the-scenes functions like "tooling efficiency," it will not be visible in player experiences.
"We maintain a strict policy ensuring that no generative AI will feature in any assets that players interact with, such as what they can see and hear in our games," Dobrowski explained.
He added that AI could enhance the efficiency of their processes but emphasized not employing it to fuel creative efforts.
Jagex is also reviewing its partnerships to confirm that no AI-generated content will inadvertently end up in its games.
Dobrowski remarked, "We are auditing and communicating with our external partners to ensure they do not misuse AI in ways that might impact our final products."
The gaming industry currently debates the application of AI. While leaders of large firms like Nexon predict its growing role in game development, some projects have been controversial. Games like Arc Raiders have sparked discussion due to Embark Studios' use of AI, yet CEO Patrick Soderlund assures it's not a replacement for human roles.
Recently, Razer's CEO, Min-Liang Tan, expressed that while players dislike AI-generated "slop," there is potential for AI in supporting developers behind the scenes.
Further insights from the conversation with Jagex's James Dobrowski will be available later this week.
