Dan Houser departed from Rockstar, stating he didn't "have another one of those games in me." He believes that creative pursuits will be led by humans, rather than AI
Dan Houser, a key figure in the creation of Grand Theft Auto, maintains that humanity will always be at the forefront of creativity. In a recent interview with Radio 4 about his new book, "A Better Paradise," which explores themes of artificial intelligence going astray, Houser expressed his view that creations made by AI are largely "generic." Earlier this week, he conveyed similar sentiments, emphasizing that AI technology is "not as useful as some companies would have you believe."
In his discussion with host Kate Molleson, Houser remarked on the future of high-quality writing, asserting, "Most creative pursuits will remain heavily influenced by human input, especially if they rely on language models. While AI can sometimes generate intriguing results, overall, the content is quite generic."
Reflecting on his departure from Rockstar in 2020, Houser admitted the complexity and duration of the studio's projects were challenging. He noted, "The projects are extensive and demanding, with numerous components to finalize, and this immense scale can consume several years of one's career, and I wasn't sure I could undertake another such endeavor."
Recently, Rockstar has been criticized for allegedly terminating employees involved with a worker’s union Discord, sparking accusations of union-busting, which the company has denied. In light of these events, Molleson inquired about the industry's work environment. Houser commented, "Overall, I'd say yes. It has its imperfections, but I find it a fundamentally positive and supportive field."
Following his exit from Rockstar, Houser initiated a new venture, Absurd Ventures, in 2021 and made a public announcement about the company in 2023.
