Executives at Epic Games have indicated that "AI is going to become more and more difficult to detect"
Epic Games has announced it will not regulate AI-generated thumbnails utilized by third-party mini-games in Fortnite. The company explained that distinguishing AI creations from human-made content will soon be impractical.
This update comes as AI-generated images increasingly appear in Fortnite's user-generated thumbnails. In a discussion with Mustard Plays, Epic Games executives stressed the importance of compliance with Epic's guidelines, while maintaining that AI tools will not be employed in its own Fortnite modes. Executive Vice President Sax Persson highlighted that human artists currently deliver superior results compared to AI.
Dan Walsh, director of product management, commented, as noted by Eurogamer, that the focus remains on rule compliance rather than the methods used to create thumbnails. "As AI continues to evolve, spotting its use will likely become unmanageable," he noted, underscoring that the real concern should be whether the content aligns with guidelines.
Epic Games' approach to AI is marked by careful consideration of ethics and proper licensing. Sax Persson explained that although new technologies are embraced, ensuring ethical practices regarding content ownership is paramount. The focus remains on delivering the best tools without compromising ethical standards.
Earlier in the year, Epic Games revealed its Epic Games Store 2024 Year in Review, which reported a milestone of 295 million users on its PC platform, marking an addition of 25 million from the previous year. Consumer expenditure surged to $1.09 billion in 2024, representing a 15% increase from the prior year. However, spending on external games decreased by 18%, totaling $255 million.
