Apple has announced the second version of the ARKit AR platform
Apple has introduced an updated augmented reality platform ARKit 2, which will appear in the latest version of the iOS 12 mobile operating system. Among other features in ARKit 2, support for multiplayer in AR games is announced.
ARKit 2 was announced during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, which is taking place these days in California. WWDC is Apple’s largest annual event, where it usually presents new products.
According to Apple representatives, with the help of ARKit 2, developers will be able to create multiplayer games in augmented reality. Moreover, gamers will have the opportunity not only to play, but also to follow the matches in spectator mode.
In addition, ARKit 2 announced the ability to remember the location of virtual objects in the real world. This will allow, for example, to interrupt the assembly of the puzzle in augmented reality and return to it later — the parts of the virtual puzzle will “lie” where they were left.
Introductory access to ARKit 2 is already open to participants of the Apple Developers Program.
Note that the creators of the popular game engines Unreal Engine and Unity have already announced support for the new platform in their products.
