Google Maps has become a platform for creating AR games

Google has opened the Google Maps navigation service API for game developers. Game creators will be able to use Google Maps resources for their projects using geolocation data.

In addition, Google announced the release of an SDK for developers based on the Unity engine. According to the company, it will give the authors of video games access to more than 100 million three-dimensional buildings, roads, parks and attractions in 200 countries around the world.

Google promised to present a demo version of the devkit next week at the international conference GDC 2018.

Google Maps navigation is already used in the well-known mobile hit Pokémon GO from Niantic studio.

Pokémon GO will soon have a company: a number of geolocation-based games have been announced this year. Among them are The Walking Dead: Our World from Finnish Next Games, Jurassic World Alive by Ludia and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite from the same Niantic.

More information about the Google Maps API can be found on the project’s website.
