PlayStation establishes a new first-party studio named Dark Outlaw Games
Sony has established a new PlayStation in-house game development team, Dark Outlaw Games, spearheaded by seasoned professional Jason Blundell.
During an interview with Jeff Gerstmann, Blundell, who serves as the studio's head and director, disclosed that Dark Outlaw has been secretly developing a yet-to-be-announced project.
Blundell expressed his enthusiasm about working with Sony as a first-party studio, noting that it is a unique opportunity since such entities are not frequently established. He described the experience as both a privilege and an honor.
The studio is currently in the process of assembling its team while maintaining a low profile to advance their game development endeavors.
Blundell, reflecting on his programming background, emphasized the importance of assessing their ideas and ensuring they are on the right track.
With nearly 20 years of experience in the gaming sector, Blundell held a pivotal role at Treyarch, helping create the Call of Duty Zombies mode.
After 13 years at Activision, Blundell departed in 2020 to co-found Deviation Games with Dave Anthony.
Deviation Games entered a partnership with PlayStation in 2021 to develop an original AAA intellectual property. In 2022, Blundell exited Deviation Games, and the company reportedly let go of nearly 90 employees the following year. By March 2024, Deviation Games ceased operations.
Rumors of Dark Outlaw's creation circulated in May 2024 when former Deviation Games technical director Michael Anthony hinted at the development of a new, secret IP by the studio.
