Sumo Group has divested its publishing arm, Secret Mode, for an unspecified amount
Sumo Group has divested its publishing arm, Secret Mode, to Emona Capital and the existing leaders of Secret Mode, Ed Blincoe and James Schall, with the transaction amount remaining undisclosed.
Emona Capital, a financial investment firm with significant knowledge in the gaming sector, already has investments in companies like Relic Entertainment and Amber Studio. However, Secret Mode will be its inaugural venture into game publishing.
According to reports, Secret Mode will maintain its operations as an independent publisher, with a focus on supporting independent games for PC and consoles. Current leaders Blincoe and Schall are fully supported by Emona and will continue to steer the company as it embarks on its next chapter.
Blincoe stated, "Secret Mode is deeply passionate about the creativity and innovation within the indie space, and so we are thrilled to be partnering with Emona Capital and to fully focus on the independent publishing scene."
He further expressed appreciation to Sumo for their initial support of Secret Mode's vision and for facilitating the transition to independence.
Schall remarked on the benefits of independence, emphasizing the company's commitment to discovering hidden indie hits and delivering top-notch titles to players. He added that there are plans to strengthen support for global indie developers and that exciting announcements are anticipated soon.
Back in 2021, Sumo Group introduced Secret Mode to oversee games developed internally as well as projects from other indie studios. Recently, Sumo Group stated it would shift its focus back to providing development services for partners, a change that led to restructuring and potential job cuts.
