The Chinese equivalent of Steam will not charge a commission on games that have earned less than $ 1.5 million

Not only Apple reduces the commission for developers with low income. The Chinese gaming store WeGame — a local analogue of Steam — said that it would not take deductions from games whose annual revenue is below 10 million rubles ($ 1.5 million).

Presentation of the WeGame innovation. A source: Daniel AhmadThis was told on Twitter by analyst Daniel Ahmad (Daniel Ahmad).

According to him, the cancellation of the commission for developers can make the Tencent platform more popular. Now the audience of the digital store only slightly exceeds 300 million registered users, with a MAU of 80 million.

But not all developers will be able to take advantage of the generous offer of the Chinese. The fact is that according to the laws of the Middle Kingdom, each game must first obtain a license for publication and distribution in the country. By the way, for the whole of 2020, only 44 new titles appeared in WeGame.

Therefore, Ahmad is not sure that Tencent’s offer will be relevant outside of China. In the comments, he noted that technically developers from all over the world will be able to claim the discount, but in fact it is more designed for developers from China.

Recall that Apple recently came up with a similar initiative. In mid-November, the company decided to reduce the commission in the App Store to 15% for those developers who earn less than $1 million a year.
