Steam shared key business indicators for the past year
The main figure of the site is a DAU of 47 million people.
Yesterday, January 14, Steam summed up the results in its blog. In a voluminous post, the platform reported what changes were made to the service for 2018. We are talking about several dozen significant innovations, including the launch of steam.tv , new content filtering tools, the appearance of a list of upcoming new products, and so on (the full list can be found at the link).
In addition, Steam has published a number of figures concerning its business indicators.
From the diagrams presented in the post, you can also find out that the sources of income of the site have changed a lot over the past five years. If in 2012 the main money went to Steam from players from North America and Western Europe, then in 2018 about a quarter of all payments began to come from Asia. Steam does not specify, but most likely we are talking about Chinese gamers.
It is also reported that a third of the Steam audience uses controllers. Almost half of these controllers are from the Xbox 360.
In addition to the results, the store also shared plans for 2019. Today, the Steam team is working in eight directions:
- popularization of games in the store (for this, a new recommendation mechanism using machine learning and new functions for broadcasts and curators will be introduced);
- launch of Chinese Steam;
- introduction of a new Steam library based on the chat updated in 2018;
- updated event system for communities;
- adding the ability to broadcast on Steam.tv of any games;
- mobile chat applications for Steam;
- fighting cheaters;
- Steam program for Internet cafes, so that players can easily use the platform from other people’s devices.
