Freejam, the developer behind Robocraft 2, has ceased operations

The developer behind Robocraft 2, Freejam, has announced its closure.

In an update shared on Discord, Freejam cited "market conditions" and server maintenance costs as reasons for discontinuing Robocraft 2, as well as the original Robocraft and Cardlife.

The sequel has already been removed from Steam, where it had been offered in Early Access.

One developer expressed, "It's with a heavy heart that we must inform you we are halting work on Robocraft 2 and closing Freejam." The statement explained that due to current market dynamics and significant server expenses, sustaining and furthering development is not feasible. Efforts will be made to wind down Robocraft 1, 2, and Cardlife in the upcoming weeks.

"Freejam has been like a family to us, and you've been integral to that," the message continued, acknowledging the community's passion and support, which enriched their experience at the studio. "Your investment of time, energy, and patience has profoundly impacted us. Thank you for being part of this journey," they concluded.

The specific impact on employment numbers remains uncertain, though Freejam's LinkedIn suggests a workforce of 11 to 50, based in Portsmouth, UK.

This announcement coincides with Swedish gaming company Enad Global 7 (EG7), which has begun winding down Toadman Interactive, leading to 69 job cuts, and letting go of 38 staff members from Piranha Games.

By mid-January 2025, over 150 positions have been eliminated across the games industry, with reductions at companies like Splash Damage and Jar of Sparks.
