In 2021, video games raised $21.8 million on Kickstarter. Less than a year ago

Video game fees on Kickstarter have declined. In 2021, game developers were able to attract “only” $21.8 million with the help of a crowdfunding platform. At the same time, the number of successful campaigns has increased.

For comparison, in 2020, developers received a total of $ 22.9 million on Kickstarter, which is 4.8% more than now. Nevertheless, $21.8 million is still a good result. It should be noted that 2020 has become the most monetary year for video games on Kickstarter over the past four years. Then, for the first time since 2015, users of the platform invested over $ 20 million in video games. Prior to that, the total volume of such donations was kept at an average of $16 million per year.

What is the reason for the current decline and which video games have become the most sponsored by the end of 2021 — the company did not tell.

But it is known that in 2021, 428 video game-related campaigns were successfully closed on Kickstarter. This is 20 more than in 2020.

The year was more productive for board games. Users supported their authors for a total of $270 million — $33.4 million higher than in 2020. The most sponsored board game was Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, which collected a record $9.5 million for a tabletop role-playing game.

Recall that at the end of last December, Kickstarter announced plans to switch to blockchain. The transition to it should begin in the first quarter of this year. Many indie developers criticized the initiative of the site, threatening to leave the site. But the Kickstarter management is not going to abandon the idea.
