In 2020, Russians spent 4.4 billion rubles on console games
Russian gamers’ spending on console games continues to grow. Last year, Russians bought more than 1.8 million games on physical media, spending over 4.4 billion rubles. The lion’s share of purchases came from discs for PlayStation consoles.
This was announced by the group of companies “M.Video-El Dorado”. We share the main thing from the report:
- In 2020, Russian retailers sold 760 thousand game consoles for more than 14.7 billion rubles. Growth — 20% in monetary terms and 13% in quantitative terms compared to 2019;
- most often, Russians bought consoles made by Sony (45%). Microsoft consoles are in second place (11%), and Nintendo is in third place (9%);
- The top five most popular consoles included: PlayStation 4 Slim, PlayStation 4 Pro, both versions of PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One S. But the Xbox Series X|S were only in the top 10;
- 80% of game sales were for products for PlayStation family consoles. Mostly they bought games for PlayStation 4 (the group did not specify what percentage remained for them);
- The best—selling PlayStation 4 game of the year is The Last of Us Part II. It is followed by FIFA 20, GTA V, Minecraft and Cyberpunk 2077;
- The best—selling PlayStation 5 game of the year is Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Also included in the top five are Demon’s Souls, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate and Sackboy: A Big Adventure;
- The second place in terms of the number of disc copies sold was taken by games for the Nintendo Switch. Animal Crossing became the leader of sales: New Horizons. Catching up with her are The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening;
- The best—selling game of the year for Xbox One consoles is FIFA 20. A little less often, Russians bought GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, UFC 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
Video games on physical media remain in demand among Russian game lovers. In 2020, during the pandemic, the relevance of the segment increased taking into account the increased time we began to spend at home. Another important driver was high-profile releases. For example, The Last of Us Part II at the start of sales became the absolute leader in our networks for the entire history of projects released on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 platforms. Demand for the long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077 game for the first four days turned out to be the highest in the history of M.Video
Recall that in 2019, Russians spent 4.2 billion rubles on console games in retail — 200 million rubles less than in 2020. But it is important to note: more games were bought then — 1.9 million instead of 1.8 million.
