The success of Warzone forced Activision Blizzard to reconsider the future of the Call of Duty franchise
After the free Battle royale attracted 75 million players, the company decided to continue its integration with future projects. It is with the help of Warzone that it is planned to announce and promote the new part of the series. In the financial report, Activision Blizzard reported record figures for the second quarter of 2020.
During a conversation with investors, representatives of the company commented on the success of Call of Duty: Warzone, as well as the further development of the entire franchise.
The
Fritupley project reached the mark of 75 million players, which created many new opportunities for other games in the series. According to the president of the publishing house Rob Kotisch, this allowed the company to revise its marketing strategy for the following numbered parts of Call of Duty.“Warzone forced us to rethink how, when and even where exactly we will present the upcoming titles,” Kotish said. Thus, the announcement of a new project in the series can take place just with the support of a shareware battle royale.
The
Warzone distribution model has not only significantly expanded the Call of Duty user base, but has also turned it into a key element for promoting and announcing new games. “Our global audience is now broader and much more engaged than at any time in the company’s history,” Kotish added.Treyarch and Raven Software are developing a new “big” Call of Duty. Despite the lack of a full-fledged announcement, Activision Blizzard still plans to release the project before the end of this year. Most likely, it is Warzone that will become the platform for the presentation of the new part of the series.
Earlier, Infinity Ward studio, which is responsible for the work of Warzone, also confirmed that the Battle royale will be closely linked to all the titles of the franchise. A growing player base and regular updates should allow the integration of numbered parts into this ecosystem.
Such statements correspond to the words of Kotish, who considers this strategy important for users. “We plan to [link Warzone] with our future premium titles in order to give players a new experience, regardless of whether they choose Warzone or a full-price game,” the president of the publishing house said during a conversation with investors.
The success of Call of Duty has played a key role in Activision Blizzard’s record financial performance. Currently, the franchise’s games are available on all platforms, including PC, consoles and mobile devices. This will allow the company to bring new products to market and promote them within a rapidly growing community.
