Ghost of Tsushima: Chinese players didn't like "evil Mongols"

The latest big exclusive for PS4 is rapidly gaining popularity. But while gamers from Europe rejoice at the quality of the picture, in China they massively criticize the plot. It’s all about disrespectful attitude to the image of the Mongols.

In Ghost of Tsushima, the story revolves around the Mongol invasion of Japan, where the Mongols are ferocious invaders, and the Japanese are heroes defending the house. The main character samurai Jin Sakai faces all the brutality of the enemies and makes his way through the Mongolian army alone.

What does China have to do with it?

The Mongols, who attacked Japan in the 13th century, have long since dissolved into China and become part of the Chinese people. But the Japanese have been disliked here since the Second World War. Therefore, in the eyes of some players, the picture is turned upside down: the Mongols should be good, and the Japanese should be bad.

Here is how one of the users of the Chinese service Zhihu comments on the situation:

“After all, this is a game where the Japanese kill the Chinese. The Mongols are a nomadic people of northern China. Like the Han Chinese, they are Chinese. Foreign players can play if they want, but the Chinese should not participate in the fun.”

Not everyone agrees with this opinion. Some players consider them nationalistic and urge not to look for enemies where there are none.

“The war during the [Mongol invasion] was a standard act of aggression. Invasion is bad, but resistance is good. Here are the basic moral concepts,” writes one of the players.

Some even consider the discussion itself absurd:

“A bunch of Chinese are trying to find national pride in a Japanese game made in the USA. How low is this…”, – said a user on the Bilibili website.

Meanwhile, sales of Ghost of Tsushima exceeded 2.4 million copies in the first three days, and all physical copies were sold out in Japan. This made it the best-selling Sony original game for PS4 at the start.
