From May 7, Japan will resume issuing ratings to games for PC and consoles

The Japanese rating agency CERO will resume work this week. In April, the organization went into quarantine for coronavirus, freezing the issuance of ratings for console and desktop games.

From May 7, CERO will return to work on a shortened day (from 10:00 to 16:00), as planned. The agency has strengthened COVID-19 prevention measures and plans to conduct some operations remotely, Gematsu writes. Earlier it was reported that CERO, like many Japanese organizations, could not afford remote mode.

CERO gives age ratings to games for the Japanese market. During the month of downtime, the agency has accumulated applications for labeling console and desktop editions. Since such games cannot be released without a rating, their releases in the Land of the Rising Sun have almost stopped at the moment.

CERO has not affected the mobile segment of the “vacation”, they do not need to receive a label from the agency.

Recall that the console and PC segment in Japan are inferior in coverage to the mobile one. Out of 70 million gamers, 41% of men and 32% of women play mobile games. Only 30% of men and 15% of women play console games.
