A startup has appeared that specializes in retro remasters - Ziggurat Interactive
Users are increasingly turning to old games adapted to modern devices and realities. Therefore, companies that specialize exclusively in such products began to appear on the market. One of them is Ziggurat Interactive.
Deadly Dozen
Ziggurat was founded at the end of last year.
Its headquarters are in Colorado. All that is known about the startup team is that it is headed by its CEO Wade Rosen. Previously, he managed software developers and was engaged in marketing, but all this is outside the gaming industry, judging by LinkedIn.
The Ziggurat team was going to tell about their future titles on March 16 at GDC 2020. However, the conference was postponed for the summer. So the publisher revealed his plans earlier.
What will Ziggurat do?
The publisher aims to “preserve and expand the legacy of the industry.” In other words — to release successful classic games for PC and retro consoles on the latest systems.
“Everyone at Ziggurat shares a passion for classic and modern games,” Rosen said. — We embodied this passion in a gaming company unlike any other. We’re not just remaking all the classic games we work with—we’re improving them by respecting the original, keeping what their audience liked and making them better for new players.”
Ziggurat is interested in projects that have been released since the early 80s. Among the games being prepared for re—release are the Deadly Dozen shooter (2001), the Super Huey simulator (1985) and the Atari 8-bit Forbidden Forest action game (1983). Each of them will be adapted to modern devices with updated graphics and gameplay.
In his press release, the publisher mentioned that he was going to introduce “completely new IP” on modern PCs and consoles. Most likely, he does not mean the development of modern new titles, but the release of retro franchises on new platforms for them.
Although Ziggurat’s management calls it “unlike other companies”, this is not entirely true. Last year, another startup was launched to revive and update retro games – GameClub. The whole difference is in the platforms: GameClub only works with mobile.
