Facebook is preparing its own OS

Facebook is working on its own operating system. Its creation will allow other social network products not to depend on Android.

According to The Information, Mark Lucovsky is developing a new OS by order of Facebook. This is an ex-Microsoft employee, one of the creators of Windows NT.

Facebook does not hide that the project is designed to rid its devices of Google addiction.

“We want to occupy our niche in the next generation. And we don’t think we can trust the whole market or individual competitors in this. That’s why we are making (the new OS) ourselves,” said Andrew Bosworth, Facebook’s vice president of hardware.

Abandoning Android in many ways will free the social network from restrictions. She will be able to increase the confidentiality of her projects, and Google’s participation will not make adjustments to their development that Facebook does not need. Now many of her gadgets work on the basis of Android. Because of this, there are tensions with Google over the timing of projects.

The new OS is planned to be integrated into XR products, such as augmented reality glasses or Oculus projects (old and new). But, as TechCrunch clarifies, the social network’s mobile apps will still be available through Google Play.

It is noted that Facebook is considering the possibility of creating a special OS for its AR-headset. The company is increasingly working with augmented reality technologies. For example, at the recent Oculus Connect 6, she presented the LiveMaps AR project and announced “augmented reality of the future.” Probably, her new OS will be integrated with this virtual space as well.
