Sony has sold 100 million copies of the PS4. Now it is the fastest selling console
The number of PS4 sold exceeded 100 million. She managed to reach this figure in a record five years and seven months for the console market. Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad compares how things are with other consoles.
On his Twitter, Ahmad published a comparative table, which shows that the PS4 was ahead of other home consoles in terms of sales*.
* Other of those listed in the table. There are no Xbox One results on the chart, because Microsoft has not reported data on its sales for a long time. Wii U is also not on the list, but only because its sales are insignificant.
Ahmad’s chart shows sales of all generations of PS, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Switch in the six years since they went on sale.
Here is an update to the cumulative global console shipment chart.
The chart is launch aligned.Key points:
– PS4 surpasses 100m, faster than PS2 and Wii
– Switch reaches 36.87m, tracking inline with PS4 pic.twitter.com/o28T7l9f9j— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) July 30, 2019PS4 Sold 100 million Copies Faster than PS2 and Nintendo Wii;
- The Nintendo Switch has been on sale for just over two years, but has already reached 36.87 copies sold. Its growth rate is comparable to the PS4.
This makes PlayStation 4 the fastest home console to reach 100 million unit sell in.
Faster than both the PS2 and Wii which were just behind.
It took PS2 a total of five years and 9 months. PS4 was just 5 years and 7 months. pic.twitter.com/g4Bk8sckYf
— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) July 30, 2019The PS4 managed to beat the PS2 by two months in terms of sales.
- 100 million copies of the latter were sold in five years and nine months.
You might be surprised to know that despite being nearly six years old, the PS4 shipped more than the Switch globally in the last quarter.
PS4 sell in was 3.2m in the quarter, Switch was 2.13m.
However, if you combine Switch and Wii U sales together, the total goes up to 2.13m
— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) July 30, 2019PS4 sales in the first quarter of the year reached 3.2 million copies, breaking the anniversary mark.
- The result of Switch for the same period is 2.13 million.
- The latter means that the success of the Sony set-top box was not affected by its long, compared to the Switch, lifetime.
According to Sony’s plan, by the end of the fiscal year (that is, until March 31, 2020) it will sell 111.8 million PS4s. Console sales this year are projected at 15 million, which is slightly lower than last year’s result.
