Online games are named the main source of online threats to young people in the Russian Federation

Residents of Russia consider online games to be the main threat on the world Wide web. At least, that’s what the Youth Parliament at the State Duma says.

The Parliament conducted an all-Russian survey among 1.2 thousand respondents in 61 regions of the country. The age of the respondents is from 18 to 44 years. According to the results of the survey, two tops were identified. The first one is dedicated to the sources of the greatest threat to young people on the web. The second is Internet threats that have the most negative impact on young people.

So, according to respondents, the sources of the greatest threat to young people on the web are:

  • online games (53%);
  • social networks (48%);
  • porn sites (45%);
  • dating sites (36%);
  • darknet (30%).

In addition, respondents mentioned among other sources of threats streams, messengers, video hosting, writes RBC.

Online games were also included in the top 10 online threats that, according to respondents, have a negative impact on young people. In this list, games are in ninth place (13% of respondents voted for them). Online recruitment to extremist organizations is in the first place (49%), followed by “death groups” (41%). Note that respondents could choose several answer options at once.

The results of the survey will be sent to the Public Chamber to make recommendations. Its experts will have to assess whether online games and other content mentioned by respondents pose a real threat.

It is not entirely clear what will happen to the content if it is recognized as destructive. The available data are not clear. But lawmakers are talking about strict regulation of Internet threats. By the way, one of the co—authors of the survey — Sergey Afanasyev, who heads the Moscow bar association “Afanasyev and Partners” – calls for pre-trial blocking of such content. The Chairman of the Youth Parliament, Maria Voropayeva, shares his point of view.

The Public Chamber will discuss the results of the survey at the end of this month.
