Over the past two weeks, several gaming vacancies have appeared on Disney Careers. The company is looking for producers, marketers, art directors associated with game development. The surprise is that all these people will join the staff of Lucasfilm Games, a studio that was renamed LucasArts 30 years ago.
Lucasfilm Games was founded by George Lucas in 1982. Eight years later, it went through a rebranding and turned into LucasArts. The studio was engaged in the development and publication of games — primarily on IP Star Wars, although it also released a series of Monkey Islands, games about Indiana Jones and much more. But in 2012, it ended up in the hands of Disney, as well as the entire parent company Lucasfilm. Very soon, the game projects that were in development at LucasArts were closed, and many of its employees were fired.
Nominally, LucasArts is still alive and is a game publisher. But, in fact, Disney is simply using the brand to license games, while the studio itself has been discontinued. However, judging by the set of vacancies, Disney decided to recreate the company under its former name.
According to PCGamesN, Lucasfilm Games will create “interactive products” for a number of franchises, including Star Wars. Its products will cover “all digital platforms”: PC, Mac, modern consoles, smartphones and AR/VR devices. One of the directions of Lucasfilm Games will be the release of mobile titles in Asian markets.
The studio’s revival contradicts Disney’s gaming strategy. Three years ago, the corporation announced that it would no longer develop games on its own. Since then, she has partnered with Jam City, Glu, Gameloft and other studios, entrusting them with the creation of games based on her IP. But now Disney can return to internal development.
