Starbreeze ended the year with a loss of $144 million
The company earned several million dollars on Overkill’s The Walking Dead, but it didn’t help.
Overkill’s The Walking Dead
In 2018, a lot of troubles hit Starbreeze.
The failure of Overkill’s The Walking Dead, large financial losses, the dismissal of top managers, police searches in the office — all this forced the publisher to begin restructuring. Today, the publisher has published a report for the final quarter of 2018 and for the whole year. The financial results clearly demonstrate the plight of Starbreeze.
Results for the quarter
- Starbreeze’s revenue reached $8.9 million dollars. This is 20% lower than in the fourth quarter of 2017.
- The pre-tax loss during this time amounted to $135.5 million. The year before, the loss was much smaller — at the level of $7.3 million.
- Released in 2013, Payday 2 earned $2.2 million in the quarter.
- A large share of the revenue — $3.7 million — was generated by Overkill’s The Walking Dead, writes Gamesindustry.biz . The game earned good money despite the bad reviews in the press. Nevertheless, it became a commercial failure. Sales were so bad that Starbreeze shares collapsed by 50% shortly after its release.
Results for the year
- Net sales of Starbreeze for the year amounted to $37.5 million. The share of Payday 2 in this amount is $10.4 million.
- The publisher’s annual loss before taxation amounted to $144 million dollars. The company also ended 2017 in the red, but then the loss was $18.9 million.
Recall that the restructuring of Starbreeze will last until the middle of this year.
