Evening Digest: Pokémon GO Money, Microsoft Ambitions, Onimusha Announcement: Warlords

Business news (and not only) of the gaming industry for August 28.

Progress

Pokémon GO is still actively “cutting coupons”

After the June 19 update, the geolocation blockbuster Pokémon GO started earning $2.5 million a day. This is 39% more than the average daily earnings of the game for April-May.

This was announced on the pages of its blog by the analytical company Sensor Tower. She also noted that we are talking about the total earnings of the game from both leading mobile platforms — the App Store and Google Play.

Position

Microsoft has no plans to turn the Xbox Game Pass into a Netflix game

A year ago, Microsoft launched subscription access to part of the Xbox One game library (i.e., a service for which a player pays a certain amount every month and can download and play a certain pool of projects). The new service is called Xbox Game Pass.

In January 2018, it became known that users of the service will have access to the AAA-novelties of the platform. The first blockbuster that Xbox Game Pass subscribers had access to was the pirate MMO Sea of Thives.

Both the announcement of the service itself and its expansion are perceived as Microsoft’s attempt to play on the Netflix field in the gaming sector. However, as it turned out, the company itself is far from this idea.

In an interview with GamesIndustry, Ben Decker, the head of Microsoft gaming services, admitted that the Xbox Game Pass is considered today as an additional functionality of the console ecosystem, not its dominant.

“In our future, the buyer should have a choice between subscription and purchase, since both users and developers are interested in this,” Ben said.

Announcements

Capcom has announced a remaster of Onimusha: Warlords

The Japanese from Capcom took up the transfer to modern platforms Onimusha: Warlords 2001 release. The game is a samurai epic about the struggle of a brave young man with demons in the setting of medieval Japan.

The mechanics of the game were close to the first parts of Resident Evil. The player also moved through locations divided into room screens (the camera on each game screen is fixed in a preset position that cannot be changed). Only there was less horror, and more action.

Onimusha: Warlords has sold 2 million copies. In addition to her, six more titles were released as part of the franchise, including the third part, where the action unfolded in modern Paris, and one of the characters was played by Jean Reno.

The remaster of the game will be released in January next year on all modern platforms.

The desire to reissue the classics on the part of Capcom is easy to understand. The company is pleased with the HD editions of the old parts of Resident Evil, is preparing a remake of Resident Evil 2 and is looking at what other brand can be revived.
