Fate Grand Order mobile game is the main source of income for Sony's daughter
Fate Grand Order, a mobile role-playing game with freeplay monetization, has become the main source of revenue for Aniplex, a subsidiary of Sony.
Aniplex earned $1.8 billion in the last fiscal year (April 2017 – March 2018). The company’s profit amounted to $462 million, of which $312 million was received from Internet products. Exactly how much FGO brought is not officially disclosed, but, as analyst Serkan Toto writes, this game is now undoubtedly the main asset of the company.
Toto noted that in the last financial year, Aniplex earned noticeably less – it had $934 million in revenue with $220 million in Internet profit. It was this year that FGO was released outside Japan – in North America, China, Korea and Southeast Asia.
According to the DataMagic service, during the specified period, FGO earned $979.5 million, and the number of its downloads amounted to 2.3 million. This is the third most profitable mobile game in the world.
FGO revenue for the fiscal year
Aniplex, in a comment by The Wall Street Journal, indicated that FGO would be its main project until at least 2019.
The monetization of FGO is based on gacha (in-game lottery) and the purchase of vayfu (virtual “wives”). Critics of FGO claim that the monetization model operates on the principle of gambling, forcing addicted gamers to spend huge amounts of money. So, the same The Wall Street Journal in a story about the game told the story of a 31-year-old player who spent more than $ 70,000 on Fate Grand Order.
