New Tomb Raider cost Eidos Montreal $135 million
Studio Eidos Montreal has revealed the total budget of the adventure thriller Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The company spent up to $135 million to create and promote the latest part of the Lara Croft saga.
This was told by the head of Eidos Montreal, David Anfossi, in an interview with the Game Industry publication.
According to Anfossi, the development of the game took from $ 70 to $ 100 million. Another $35 million was marketing expenses.
When asked about the payback of the game with a single-player story campaign, the head of Eidos Montreal replied that the studio does not want to chase multiplayer trends and try to make Tomb Raider or Deus Ex look like PUBG and Overwatch for the sake of fashion.
Anfossi stressed that a well-made game will always find the right audience.
At the same time, David said that Eidos Montreal is now coming up with and testing various ideas for online games.
David Anfossi also shared his vision of the evolution of games with a single-player campaign and a strong plot. According to him, such projects need to become shorter so that the gamer can come from the beginning of the story to the denouement in about 3 hours.
“I’m enjoying the new God of War, but I’m afraid I won’t have enough time to overcome it in its entirety. It’s frustrating,” Anfossi said.
David considers last year’s action adventure Hellblade: Senua Sacrifice from Ninja Theory studio to be a good example of a not too long narrative game for one player.
