Monument Valley Creator: Mobile premium games have found their place in the market
Ken Wong, the leading designer of the mobile indie hit Monument Valley and creator of the interactive novella Florence, believes that frituplay is not a prerequisite for a successful mobile game. In his opinion, people are ready to buy high-quality titles.
Wong cited Monument Valley as an example. The Ustwo studio puzzle was released in 2014, when the fritupley distribution model already dominated the mobile market.
According to the game designer, Monument Valley became one of the few premium mobile games at that time. She showed that frituplay is not omnipotent, and a paid title can also be commercially successful.
Wong stressed that over the past 4 years, the premium mobile games market has become more competitive, and this is partly due to Monument Valley.
Ken Wong also added that his second game, Florence, is also selling well on iOS and Android. Florence was released earlier this year. The game was created by the Mountains studio, which Wong founded after leaving Ustwo.
According to the developer, the success of a mobile game depends on what kind of experience and impressions its authors will be able to give to the gamer.
Wong noted that studying and working with the capabilities of the mobile platform are markedly different from developing games for PC and consoles, where there are long-established templates for creating titles.
