The list of the 52 highest-grossing mobile companies for 2017 includes Nintendo and Playrix
A selection of the most profitable publishers of applications on the mobile market for 2017 has appeared on the web. The most interesting thing about it: the emergence of new names and the high position of the casual colossus Playrix, based in Russia.
App Annie analytical service annually publishes a similar selection. The non–standard number of its participants – 52 – is due to the fact that the companies in the chart are compared with playing cards. App Annie calls the entire collected chart a “Deck of Winners”. The leading companies “in terms of total revenue from iOS and Google Play for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2017” fall into it.
New teams in the selection
The biggest changes are traditionally at the tail and middle of the list. For example, Rovio got into the “deck” again, which was last in the selection in 2014. Aristocrat, which has acquired assets such as Plarium and Big Fish– has risen significantly – by 14 positions. Suddenly, the Turkish studio Peak Games, engaged in match-2 projects, got into the chart. Together with her, Nintendo debuted in the top of the most successful mobile publishers from the 34th place.
Another newcomer was the Chinese studio FunPlus. Today she is known as the developer of the King of Avalon strategy. But she can also be remembered for Family Farm and Barn Voyage, which she sold along with their teams for $960 million in 2014.
Russian trace
Playrix has risen very high in the top for the year. A year ago, the studio, whose development is mainly located in Russia, was in 32nd place. By the end of 2017, it almost reached the top ten. The company was in 11th place. Today, she earns more from mobile than companies such as Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Konami and Zynga.
There are no other companies with a Russian background in the top. Recall that in 2014 there were two of them – Social Quantum and Game Insight.
Changes in the top ten
There are two important events in the top ten of the Winners’ Deck.
The first is the departure of Supercell from the top three. This is due to a decrease in the performance of Clash of Clans, which occurred despite a large-scale update of the game, and the lack of new releases.
The second is getting into the Netmarble top three. This was due to the incredible success of Lineage 2: Revolution – the game’s earnings are $ 220 million per quarter – and the appearance of Kabam fighting games in the company’s portfolio. The latter, together with the development teams, were acquired by the Korean company at the end of 2016 for $ 800 million.
