Loot boxes will disappear from Rocket League
By the end of this year, Psyonix studio will change the monetization in Rocket League. Loot boxes with a random reward will be removed from the game.
The authors of the game are preparing a new, “more transparent” form of monetization, according to them. It will immediately show which in-game items the player pays for. Similarly, the monetization system works in the early Fortnite PvE campaign from Epic Games, which now owns Psyonix. This is reported by Gamasutra.
Note that the loot boxes in Rocket League for more than two years did not reflect the chance of a valuable drop at all. When Psyonix revealed the percentages of randomness, it turned out that the most valuable items fall out with a chance of 1%.
This approach to monetization is not too attractive for players. Therefore, last year Psyonix promised to change the system. It will continue to support such monetization elements as Rocket Pass Premium, esports cosmetics store and DLC with exclusive cars. Only the loot boxes will disappear (by the way, they are no longer available in Belgium and the Netherlands due to the peculiarities of local legislation).
When the new form of monetization will replace the loot boxes has not yet been announced.
Rocket League is a multiplayer blockbuster, one of the most popular games on Steam. The game combines elements of racing and football, for which it was called “arcade auto football”. Its authors were bought by Epic Games in May of this year.
