Mortal Kombat 1 cements its status as best-selling fighting game franchise, with over 5 million copies sold
NetherRealm Studios has announced a new milestone for Mortal Kombat 1. The game has sold over 5 million units globally since its September 2023 launch.
Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat and chief creative officer at NetherRealm Studios, shared the news on January 21, while giving an update on the state of the franchise’s latest game.
“With over 5 million games sold, seeing Mortal Kombat 1 still in the top 15 most played Playstation 5 games makes us very grateful to Mortal Kombat fans,” Boon wrote, also citing data from Circana’s weekly Player Engagement Tracker.
While seeing MK1 in the top 15 PS5 titles by weekly active users is impressive, it is worth noting that the game is absent from similar charts on Xbox and Steam (via Circana).

Mortal Kombat 1 crossed the 4 million mark last August, meaning it took the game about five months to sell another million units. MK11 remains the best-selling installment in the series, with over 15 million units sold globally.
The last time WB Games and NetherRealm publicly disclosed figures for the Mortal Kombat franchise was in October 2022, saying its lifetime sales had surpassed 79 million copies. Taking into account the latest MK1 data, the entire series has likely sold around 84 million units since 1992.
This makes it the best-selling fighting game franchise of all time:
- Mortal Kombat — 84 million units;
- Super Smash Bros. — around 75.5 million units (as of September 30, 2024), including 35.14 million copies of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate;
- Tekken — 57 million units (as of March 31, 2024);
- Street Fighter — 55 million units (as of September 30, 2024);
- Soulcalibur — 17 million units (as of July 2021).
