Monster Hunter: World hits 25 million copies sold, with entire franchise approaching 100 million mark

Monster Hunter: World has reached a new sales milestone. Six years after its launch, it remains the most commercially successful game in the franchise, which has just celebrated its 20th anniversary.

On March 12, Capcom announced that Monster Hunter: World had surpassed 25 million copies sold globally. This also includes shipments of the Iceborn Master Edition, which consists of the base game and the Iceborn expansion.

The publisher didn’t disclose the sales of each version, but according to its list of platinum titles, the Iceborn Master Edition had sold 4.5 million copies as of December 31, 2023.

Launched in January 2018, Monster Hunter: World received critical acclaim and also peaked at over 334k concurrent players upon its release on Steam in August 2018 (via SteamDB). It is also the best-selling entry in the Monster Hunter series*:

The entire Monster Hunter franchise has sold over 97 million copies globally. It is Capcom’s second best-selling IP, trailing only Resident Evil (over 154 million units sold). Other successful series in the company’s portfolio include Street Fighter (53 million copies sold), Mega Man (41 million copies sold), and Devil May Cry (30 million copies sold).

Right now, Capcom is working on Monster Hunter Wilds, which is expected to come out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025. Last year, the publisher also launched Niantic-developed mobile AR game Monster Hunter Now, which surpassed 10 million downloads in its first month.
