Nintendo Switch sales reached one million units in the first half of 2024, according to Japan's monthly charts

Sales of the Nintendo Switch in Japan fell significantly during the first half of 2024, with only 1.3 million units sold compared to 1.9 million units in the same period of the previous year, marking a 31% decrease.

Famitsu reports indicate that both versions of the PlayStation 5 sold a combined total of 791,497 units between January and June, a 43% decline from the 1.4 million units sold during the same timeframe last year.

Nintendo dominated the market with ¥16 billion ($100 million) in software sales, securing a 31.7% market share. Square Enix followed with ¥4.7 billion ($29.5 million), and Atlus made ¥3.7 billion ($23.2 million).

The best-selling physical game for the first half of 2024 was Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS5, with 339,168 units sold. Super Mario Bros. Wonder took second place with 328,317 units, and Momotaro Dentetsu World: The Earth Spins with Hope reached third with 280,000 units sold.

June 2024 sales performance in Japan:

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD led the charts, selling 88,425 copies within three days of its release. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was in second place with an additional 77,493 units sold in June.

Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance secured third place on Switch and seventh on PS5, with a combined 66,620 units sold by the end of June following its release on June 14.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree edition for PS5 achieved sixth place with sales just over 31,000 units.

In terms of revenue, Nintendo was the top publisher with ¥2.7 billion ($17 million) in sales. Atlus rose to second place with 11.1% of sales, followed by FromSoftware in third, capturing a 7% market share.

The Switch led hardware sales in June with a 77.4% market share, equivalent to 868,958 units sold. The PS5 accounted for 15.4% of the market with 173,067 units sold.

Examining hardware performance, all versions of the Switch combined sold 225,316 units, while the PlayStation 5's two models collectively sold 117,592 units.
