Nintendo's half-year profit exceeded $2 billion. This is 243% more than a year ago
Nintendo shared the results of the first financial half of 2021 (April-September 2020). The report shows record profit growth, the continued popularity of Animal Crossing and strong sales of Switch.
Key facts of the first financial half of the year:
- the volume of profit for this period reached the level of ¥213.1 billion ($2.06 billion). Note that exactly a year ago, Nintendo earned 243% less — ¥62 billion ($600 million);
- net sales also grew well — ¥769.5 billion ($7.54 billion). Moreover, Americans bought the most from Nintendo — they made 40% of sales. Residents of European countries were a little less active — 24.5%. Completing the top three are the Japanese, who are responsible for 22.5% of purchases;
- separately, the company highlighted digital sales. Over the past six months, the “figure” has brought in ¥171.5 billion ($1.66 billion).
- the most “purchased” game was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. From April to September, players bought 14.27 million copies. As a result, the total sales of the title amounted to over 22 million units;
- Super Mario 3D All-Stars has performed well. The circulation of this collection of platformers reached 5.21 million copies, although the release took place a couple of weeks before the end of the reporting period;
- in just six months, 20 Nintendo titles were able to sell a million copies or more. Of these, 15 games were developed directly by a Japanese company, and five were developed by third—party studios;
- Switch continues to be in demand among consumers. Within six months, gamers purchased 12.53 million portable consoles — 80.9% more than last year. The players were interested not only in the classic Switch, but also in its lightweight model — Switch Lite. Sales of the latter increased immediately by 113.7%;
- sales of software for the Switch line have also grown significantly. Nintendo sold 71.4% more copies of software for these consoles compared to the same period in 2019;
Plans for the near future:
- Nintendo has planned the launch of several projects. Most of them are related to the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros;
- To catch up with the Pikmin 3 Deluxe and Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit released in October, the corporation is preparing the February launch of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. In addition, a replica of the Game & Watch console in the style of Super Mario Bros. will appear on the shelves in a week.
