The revenue of the German gaming market reached almost €4 billion in the first half of 2020

In the first half of 2020, German residents spent €3.7 billion on games, which is 27% more than a year earlier for the same period. One of the main reasons is self—isolation during a pandemic. The largest increase occurred in the category of in-game purchases.This is described in the report, which was prepared by the German Gaming Industry Association (Game) based on data from App Annie and GfK, as well as surveys of Germans aged 16 and older.

Key indicators

  • more than a third of respondents admitted that they began to play more often in the last six months;total revenue amounted to €3.7 billion against €2.9 billion for the same period in 2019.
  • At the same time, for the whole of last year, the German gaming market generated €6.2 billion;most of the revenue came from in—game purchases, which amounted to €1.5 billion – an increase of 35% year-on-year;
  • the Germans began to buy more consoles, PCs, accessories and other hardware.
  • This segment accounted for €1.3 billion in revenue — an increase of 21% year-on-year;The Germans also spent money on buying individual games (€486 million) and paying for online services (€320 million).
  • Felix Falk, Managing Director of Game, believes that these are unprecedented figures, even considering the already high growth rates of the German gaming market in recent years.

“It is also worth noting that many people have started to actively buy gaming devices, despite the fact that revenue in this area usually falls before the release of a new generation of consoles. All these factors indicate how important the games are now — and it’s not just the COVID-19 pandemic, Falk said.
