SuperData: the initial revenue of Fall Guys on PC is $185 million. This is the biggest launch since Overwatch

SuperData summed up the results of last month in a new review of the digital gaming market. Among other things, analysts talked about the success of the PC versions of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and Horizon Zero Dawn.

In August, the revenue growth of digital sales in annual terms amounted to 16%, reaching $10.8 billion. Indicators have increased in all segments. Mobile games earned 3% more, PC titles — by 15%, console games — by 88%.

Digital games have increased earnings well in the first eight months of 2020 relative to the same period a year earlier. They received $82.8 billion.

According to analysts, the current growth is still associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital retail revenue rose sharply in March, when the global self-isolation regime began. Since then, each platform has generated more annual revenue.

SuperData also notes the successes of individual games:

  • initial digital sales of Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout on PC amounted to $185 million. This is the largest launch of the game on PC since the release of Overwatch in May 2016. PC-circulation of Mediatonic title reached 8.2 million.
  • In August, the PC version of Horizon: Zero Dawn sold 716 thousand copies. The former PS4 exclusive is almost on par with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt and has significantly surpassed Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Death Stranding. The PC circulation of the latter for the premiere month amounted to 477 thousand copies.
  • In August, premium sports games earned $321 million:

1) digital sales of Madden NFL 21 reached 570 thousand copies;
2) NBA 2K20 revenue increased by 165% compared to NBA 2K19 revenue in August 2019;
3) the circulation of the PGA Tour 2K21 in “digital” was 580 thousand copies.

  • Meanwhile, Fortnite‘s revenue in the mobile segment fell 62% after the game was removed from the App Store and Google Play. The revenue of the title on PC and consoles helped to compensate for the drop, which increased by 76% compared to July;
  • Pokémon GO continues to break its own records. The game earned 25% more than in August 2016, when there was a previous peak in revenue. SuperData attributes this to the traditional summer increase in interest in Pokémon GO and predicts a decline in earnings in September or October;
  • The ban on PUBG Mobile in India, as well as the removal from Fortnite stores, did not affect the battle royale. Neither the income nor the number of players have changed significantly.
