Electronic Arts called the last quarter unprecedented for its business
Publisher Electronic Arts summed up the financial results for April-June. The period turned out to be very successful for the company. One of the main drivers of growth was the PC games market.
Command & Conquer Remastered
But about everything in order.
Let’s go through the main figures and sales factors.
Net revenue of the company reached $1.4 billion (an annual growth of 21%).
Most of the revenue came from games-services of $1.1 billion. This is 16% more than a year earlier. Among the key growth factors:
- a) a very successful release of the fifth season of Apex Legends, thanks to which the level of involvement in the game has reached the level of the first season;
- b) the company purchased 100% more users for FIFA and 140% more for Madden NFL than a year earlier.
Directly from the sales of copies of games, it was possible to earn $ 359 million. In annual terms, the growth was 37%. There are also two key factors here:
- a) the release of two expected remasters at once — Command & Conquer Remastered and Burnout Paradise Remastered;
- b) launching 30 titles from the old library on Steam in three months at once.
Despite such attention to the PC, at the end of the quarter, most of Electronic Arts’ earnings still came from consoles — $932 million (23% growth). However, computer games turned out to be the main driver of growth. Their revenue jumped by 28% to $325 million. As for mobile games, this is the weakest market for the company right now. It accounted for $202 million. And more importantly, it has almost not grown in annual terms.
From the interesting. During the quarter, Electronic Arts’ operating expenses amounted to $700 million. Most of this money went directly to development — $438 million. Quarterly marketing expenses amounted to only $121 million. After deducting expenses and taxes, the gaming giant’s net profit amounted to $365 million.
Key managers of Electronic Arts call the past first quarter unprecedented in terms of the speed of business growth relative to other first quarters (in the reporting April-June appear exactly as the first quarter of fiscal 2021).
It was also announced that within the framework of the current situation in the world, the involvement of users in Electronic Arts games was very large for this time of year and much higher than previously predicted.
But in the second quarter (July-September), the company expects a radical decline in indicators. According to her forecasts, she will earn $1.1 billion, and net revenue will be $61 million. And this is despite four major releases: Madden NFL 21, Rocket Arena, Star Wars: Squadrons and UFC 4.
