This analysis was prepared by specialists of The NPD Group. The figures from their report were published by Venture Beat.
General market figures
- Total turnover — $755 million (fell by 29% year-on-year).
- Video game sales — $183 million (down 34% year-on-year).
- Sales of iron — $307 million (fell by 31% year-on-year).
- Accessory sales — $265 million (fell by 11% year-on-year).
All market segments show a double-digit decline for the second month. Since the beginning of 2020, their total turnover has amounted to $1.4 billion. According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, this amount is 28% less than earnings for January and February 2010.
Game Sales
The decline in gaming software sales, according to Piskatela, is explained by the stronger releases of February 2019. Then Anthem, Far Cry: New Dawn, Metro: Exodus and Jump Force came out. There were no such high-profile releases in the past February.
As a result, not a single novelty was included in the top ten best-selling games in February. The best—selling of them — The Yakuza Remastered Collection – is located only on the 33rd line of the list.
Nevertheless, the top was able to surprise. Now it is headed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, released in September. She managed to return to the top of the chart — and this happened even before the release of Call of Duty: Warzone. Perhaps the game will retain its leadership in March.
In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the top: people have become more active in taking games about epidemics. And so Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, a project about the virus-ravaged United States, returned to the chart. In addition, in February, the game was sold with big discounts: only $2.99 in digital form and $5 for a physical copy.

Console Sales
This time, NPD did not dwell on consoles in more detail. In January, the dynamics of the Nintendo Switch broke for the first time in a year and its sales went down. In February, due to the coronavirus epidemic, there was a shortage of Switch in a number of countries. So the console probably couldn’t take off again.
Recall that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One also sold worse in January, which is associated with the end of their life cycle.
