The Italian gaming market almost reached €1.5 billion in 2017

The annual turnover of the video game industry in Italy amounted to €1.43 billion. This is reported by the Association of Italian Video Game Developers (AESVI) with reference to data from the analytical company GSD and the mobile analytics service App Annie.

Indicators of the Italian video game market in 2017

Digital and physical sales of video games in Italy generated €1 billion last year.

From it:

  • €370 million — sales of physical copies;
  • €294 million — electronic copies on PC and console;
  • €385 million — mobile games.

Annual revenues from the sale of gaming equipment amounted to €428 million.

Of these:

  • €333 million gaming consoles (of which €16 million are portable consoles);
  • €94 million — gaming accessories, mainly gamepads.

Last year, 1.1 million home consoles were sold in Italy, and 87 thousand of them were retro consoles, such as the Nintendo SNES Mini.

Sales of portable consoles amounted to 135.7 thousand units.

According to AESVI chairman Paolo Chisari, the Italian gaming market grew last year mainly due to the release of the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One X along with strong sales of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro.

What was played in Italy in 2017

According to a GameTrack survey by the European Federation of Video Game Developers, the PC remains the leading gaming platform in Italy — 46% of respondents play on it.

The most popular console for Italians last year was the PlayStation 4. It is owned by 31% of respondents.

Among mobile systems, Android turned out to be twice as popular as iOS.
