Haruhiro Tsujimoto, president of Capcom, linked the elevated cost of the PlayStation 5 to the tepid sales of Monster Hunter Wilds.

In a conversation with Nikkei Gaming, with translations provided by ResetEra, Tsujimoto reflected on the game's initial achievements, noting it sold eight million units within three days, marking a remarkable milestone as the fastest-selling release in Capcom’s history.

Despite this early triumph, Capcom's latest financial report described Monster Hunter Wilds' sales as "soft" with 477,000 units sold in Q1 2025, amassing total sales of 10.6 million.

Tsujimoto indicated the significant expenses of owning a PlayStation 5, including the base price of about ¥80,000 ($538) and additional costs for games and subscriptions totaling roughly ¥100,000 ($672), as discouraging for many buyers.

"These costs are particularly burdensome, especially for younger age groups, and this is a trend we observe globally, not just in Japan," he stated.

Capcom is "developing a plan" to "increase Monster Hunter Wilds sales" going forward this year, Tsujimoto mentioned.

In the same discussion, he also remarked on the reception of the Switch 2, priced at ¥48,980 ($329). "The market's reaction was very positive," he noted.

"Price differences exist across countries, but this underscores the strong focus on affordability among typical consumers," he added.
