Facebook has launched a free cloud gaming service for mobile games
Facebook is entering the cloud gaming market. The company has launched its own free service focused not on AAA projects, but mainly on mobile games. At the same time, due to Apple restrictions, iOS users will be deprived of this feature. The launch of the cloud service was announced by Jason Rubin, Facebook’s vice president for games and co-founder of Naughty Dog studio.
In test mode, the function was used by 200 thousand users from different regions per week, but for now the service is available only in some regions of the United States.
To play in the cloud, you do not need a separate application — this function will be available in the “Games” tab or directly in the news feed. Unlike competitors represented by xCloud or Stadia, you will not have to pay for a subscription to use the service. At the same time, Facebook focuses not on hardcore gamers, but on the casual audience of mobile games. At the start, five titles are available to users: Asphalt 9: Legends, Mobile Legends: Adventure, PGA TOUR Golf Shootout, Solitaire: Arthur’s Tale and WWE SuperCard.
Since such games are free-to-play, the company will earn money on in-game purchases. Facebook will receive a commission of 30% from each transaction.
The cloud service is available on the website and in the Android app. On iOS, users will be left without new features, because, according to Apple’s rules, each game must be approved and presented in a separate application.
“Everyone understands that Apple treats games differently. We have a large user base, and therefore we will still be able to find an audience,“ says Rubin.
Apple told TechCrunch that it continues to cooperate with Facebook and wants to help the company launch a gaming service in the App Store in accordance with all the rules. So far, iOS users will be able to play in the cloud via the mobile web version (Apple recently bypassed Amazon in a similar way).
