TikTok and WeChat will be removed from American stores this Sunday
Starting this Sunday, TikTok and WeChat will be withdrawn from the US App Store and Google Play. Washington has begun implementing the orders of President Donald Trump.
Chinese entrepreneurs failed to reach an agreement with the White House. Social apps will still be blocked in the US. The situation is better with other countries.
According to the Financial Times, the US Department of Commerce, on whose behalf the ban will be issued, decided not to extend the ban to the Chinese App Store and Google Play. In China, it will still be possible to download these applications in marketplaces. According to Reuters, the ban will not affect other regions.
Trump’s plans to shut down the apps became known in August. Then he signed two orders, which are now coming into force. According to them, among other things, from September 20, any transfers of ByteDance and WeChat to the Tencent business from any persons and companies within the jurisdiction of the United States are prohibited.
However, in technical terms, the ban will take effect only from November 12.
Earlier, ByteDance negotiated with both local officials and businessmen about a possible settlement of the situation. In particular, plans for a deal with Oracle were recently unveiled. Under its terms, the American division of TikTok could be separated into a separate company with American leadership and a security committee headed by an official from state security. At the same time, most of the new company was supposed to belong to ByteDance.
This scenario did not suit Trump. What he said on Wednesday. However, the same Reuters notes that Trump can still cancel his orders before they take effect.
Also today it became known that American regulators are showing interest in Tencent’s local gaming business. Companies such as Riot Games and Epic Games are required to disclose the security protocols used in the processing of personal data of Americans.
