Resident Evil 3 angered Chinese patriots. They didn't like the password to the safe in the game
There are more pitfalls in the Chinese market than is commonly believed. This was recently confirmed by the Japanese publisher Capcom, whose demo versionResident Evil 3 has angered some Chinese players.
The game has a closed safe. In order to open it, you need to either pick up a three—digit password, or find a hint at the level. The password consists of the following digits — 9, 1 and 8.
It was this combination in the game developed in Japan that infuriated part of the gaming audience of the Celestial Empire,” our colleagues from Abacus write.
Patriotic-minded Chinese gamers considered 918 a reference to the Mukden incident. In September (9) 1931, namely on the 18th, the invasion of Imperial Japan into Manchuria started.
This event is considered the beginning of a long confrontation between the two countries, which ended with the eight-year Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). In its course, according to various sources, from 20 to 35 million people died on the Chinese side alone.
The patriots of the Middle Kingdom believe that the figure could have been accidental if some small American or European studio had made the game. But here we are talking about a Japanese giant.
It’s not the first time Chinese players have “noticed” references to World War II in Japanese products. In February of this year, the manga and anime My Hero Academia removed Bilibili and Tencent from their distribution channels.
One of the villains of the work was calledMaruto Shigo. In the universe of the franchise, he was engaged in experiments on people. The connection of the name and occupation in China was considered a direct reference to the crimes of the 731 Japanese army, which during World War II put bacteriological experiments on people and called its victims “muruta” (i.e. logs). As a result, the villain was renamed.
Whether Capcom will change the password is an open question. At the start, the project is unlikely to be officially available in China. Before entering, including digital retail, he must obtain permission from the local regulator.
