Minecraft and Destiny are the best—selling new IP of the decade in the UK
The charts of the best-selling new IP in British retail for a decade have arrived. Minecraft and Destiny, respectively, became bestsellers in pieces and in money.
Both ratings were compiled by the analytical GfK Entertainment. She refers to the new IP as a game or franchise:
- launched in 2010-2019;
- and not related to a brand released before 2010.
So, for example, The Last of Us got into the lists, but Forza Horizon didn’t. The latter is included in the Forza IP along with the Forza Motorsport franchise, which came out in the noughties.
Sales in pieces
Minecraft from Mojang boasts the largest number of copies sold. There is a small nuance here. Minecraft was released in 2009, but the game reached the shelves in the UK only by 2013. So GfK Entertainment took into account the sales of games of this IP only for seven years.
1. Minecraft (Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo)
2. Destiny (Bungie/Activision Blizzard)
3. Zumba Fitness (505 Games)
4. Watch Dogs (Ubisoft)
5. Kinect Sports (Microsoft)
6. The Last of Us (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
7. Dead Island (Koch/Deep Silver)
8. L.A. Noire (Take-Two/Rockstar Games)
9. Dishonored (Bethesda)
10. Titanfall (EA)
Note that Microsoft is the only publisher that has released not one, but two games from the list at once.
It is also interesting that Zumba Fitness got into the chart. It looks strange in the top 10 next to such high-profile titles as The Last of Us and Watch Dogs. But as Gamesindustry notes.biz, her Wii version was a big hit in the UK at the beginning of the decade. This explains the high sales.
Sales in money
The most profitable IP of the decade in British retail was the Destiny series from Bungie. Recall that for some time these games were published by Activision Blizzard. But a year ago, the studio left the publisher and took the IP.
1. Destiny (Bungie/Activision Blizzard)
2. Minecraft (Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo)
3. Watch Dogs (Ubisoft)
4. Zumba Fitness (505 Games)
5. The Last of Us (Sony Interactive Entertainment)
6. Kinect Sports (Microsoft)
7. Titanfall (EA)
8. L.A. Noire (Take-Two/Rockstar Games)
9. Overwatch (Activision Blizzard)
10. Dead Island (Koch/Deep Silver)
In general, the sales chart in monetary terms looks almost the same as in the piece. Separately, it is worth noting The Last of Us and L. A. Noire. They got into both ratings — and at the same time, only one game was released from each IP, responsible for high sales.
As GfK Entertainment added, the following IP’s have been selling well in British retail over the past 10 years: Rocket League, Dark Souls, The Evil Within, Rage, Splatoon, Horizon Zero Dawn and others.
