Google introduces a certification system for gaming smartphones
Google plans to launch a certification program for gaming devices (Gaming Device Certification). The company wants Android-based gaming smartphones to fit the recommended system requirements of games.
According to Google’s plan, Android games should work on various gaming smartphones without loss of quality, FPS drawdowns, etc. This means that mobile gamers, like console gamers, will be able to run games without thinking about technical details.
The future certification program is known thanks to the leak of the latest version of the Google Mobile Services (GMS) document. It contains technical requirements for smartphone manufacturers with support for Google Play store and Google Play Services.
Section 13.14 in GMS is devoted to the new certification program. According to it, a certified device must:
- use all CPU cores when working;
- allocate at least 2.3 GB of RAM to the game;
- support the most up-to-date APIs related to GPUs;
- pass compatibility tests with OpenGL ES/Vulkan;
- support Vulkan 1.1.
The certification program contains other conditions. Read more here.
