Sony has earned more on games than on consoles
Sony Corporation has reported on the results of the work of the gaming division of Sony’s Game&Network Services for the 3rd fiscal quarter of 2017. Over the past three months, the company has delivered fewer consoles, but compensated for this with a significant increase in game sales.
Total revenues of Sony’s Game&Network Services reached $6.5 billion, an increase of 16.2% compared to the same period last year.
The sale of titles has become the main source of revenue for Sony’s Game&Network Services. The division earned $2.7 billion in gaming sales, 70% more than a year ago.
Revenues from gaming consoles, on the contrary, decreased — during the reporting period Sony sold 9 million PlayStation 4. In the 3rd quarter of 2016, console sales amounted to 9.7 million units.
Console sales in 2016 were higher due to the release of the PlayStation 4 Pro, which was released in November.
Revenues from digital distribution of Sony games and gaming services have grown almost 10 times over the past 5 years.
According to Daniel Ahmad, an analyst at Niko Partners, if the revenue of the PlayStation Network gaming platform for 2012 was only $900 million, then by 2017 the amount had increased to $8.4 billion.
