In Russia, 2 million console games were sold in 2017 (retail)
Over the past year, Russians spent 5 billion rubles on the purchase of discs with games. That’s how much it took to purchase 2 million copies of games for consoles and 0.25 million games for PC.
This is the assessment of the Russian retailer “M.Video”. He also notes that in general, the same number of games were sold in 2017 as in 2016. However, in money, sales increased by 20%.
The latter is explained by the growth in sales of games for consoles. Within the console segment, they increased by 10% (in units). This is against the background of a twofold reduction in retail sales of PC games.
2 million seems like a big number, but before the 2014 crisis, sales were even bigger. As a result, 3.14 million console games were sold in 2014, and in 2016, when the market recovery had already begun, 1.8 million copies were sold.
The growth of interest in console games in 2017 Oleg Reznikov, Head of the Entertainment and Photo/Video Department at M.Video”, explains two factors: “Firstly, 2017 was very generous with high-quality, popular games. Such cult series as Forza Motorsport, Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, FIFA and others were continued. Secondly, despite the fact that the new versions of the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One S consoles were released last year, 2016, they gained popularity already in 2017.”
Top sales by piece
In terms of sales of console hardware in Russia, too, everything is fine.
Today it is one of the drivers of the entire electronics market. According to the assessment of “M.Video”, over the past year, the turnover of game consoles and accessories to them in money and pieces increased by a third compared to the results of 2016.
