EA may abandon the annual editions of the FIFA and Madden NFL series
Electronic Arts Corporation is thinking about transferring the largest FIFA and Madden NFL sports franchises from annual releases to a subscription system, and maybe even about transferring the games themselves to the cloud.
This was announced by EA CEO Andrew Wilson in an interview with the business publication Bloomberg.
He said that the company was seriously thinking about switching to FIFA and Madden to the “game-service” model, in which all new content will be downloaded from the network as it is released.
EA is already using a similar content distribution system in China and South Korea. Every 4 years, the company releases a new version of the game and then gradually updates and improves it.
“This is how we work in Asia and support mobile games. I think we will extend this practice to other regions,” Wilson said.
Wilson also spoke about the possibility that in the future Madden NFL and FIFA will become completely cloud—based games – they will be launched and played on servers.
