SuperData notes that the size of the audience in each segment of the gaming business is limited, so publishers are lowering the starting barrier for new consumers and looking for new ways to monetize existing players.
“By switching to the “game as a service” model, publishers of AAA titles can hypothetically abandon the full cost in favor of an ecosystem where players pay for subscription access to basic games, and monetization through purchases of game content. Publishers are willing to sacrifice the full price of the game because they believe that a subscription can increase player retention and spending. In addition, the subscription introduces the gamer to other games from the publisher’s portfolio, which otherwise he would have ignored because of their cost,” comments SuperData.
According to the company, the current unrest due to loot boxes in Electronic Arts games is a temporary disease of the growth of the gaming industry and the search for new ways to develop.
