NPD: disputes about loot boxes did not affect game sales

The public discussion about the monetization of video games through loot boxes did not affect the sales of large titles, according to the analytical company NPD Group.

Recall that the gaming community reacted inconsistently to the appearance of loot boxes in the latest AAA games, such as Destiny 2, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War and Forza Motorsport 7.

Gamers were unhappy that $60 worth of games were trying to make even more money from players with sets of random items.

NPD specialist Matt Piscatella claims that games with loot boxes continue to be bought at the same pace as before the media scandal began.

This applies both to new games like Destiny 2 and to earlier titles such as FIFA 18 and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege.

Piscatella added that it will be possible to draw some conclusions about the impact of loot boxes on the gaming market based on sales for the 4th quarter.
