CD Projekt acquired The Molasses Flood – creator of The Flame in the Flood and Drake Hollow

Last week CD Projekt bought the American studio The Molasses Flood. She will develop a new project based on the original IP. Details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Despite the fact that The Molasses Flood is now part of a Polish company, it will continue to operate under its own brand separately from the main CD Projekt team.

“The Molasses Flood shares our passion for video games: she has extensive experience in game development and the application of new technologies. I am convinced that the guys will bring inspiration and determination to the team,” Adam Kiciński, president and one of the CEOs of CD Projekt, comments on the deal.

The purchase of an American studio may be part of CD Projekt’s strategy, which needed “free hands”: the company claimed that from 2022 it would switch to parallel development. The program is called Red 2.0.

It implies that the creator of The Witcher will work on several AAA projects at the same time. This also includes the development of next-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3.

The Molasses Flood was founded in 2014 by people who worked on Bioshock, Halo, Guitar Hero and Rock Band. The difficult story of the studio was told by journalist and analyst Jason Schreier in his latest book “Press Reset”.

According to her, The Molasses Flood was on the verge of closure, but in 2016 it was saved by the release of the Switch survival simulator The Flame in the Flood. Then the studio could not find a publisher for a long time for the Drake Hollow cooperative survival, which was eventually warmly welcomed on Steam a year ago.
